After the proposal to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the visa exemption extension is available for 5 European countries: the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy.
Renewed visa exemption extension is for a three-year period, that is until 2020. Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc approved the final decision at the regular government meeting on May 3. The plan was that visa waiver program expires at the end of June this year.
However, the proposal from the Vietnam Tourism Association still needs to be considered. The proposal considers the prolonging of the period of stay from 15 to 30 days, as well as including more countries in the visa exemption.
Vietnam visa exemptions started in July 2015 and the government updated them on an annual basis.
The number of visitors from Western Europe in 2015 was 720,000. This number rose to 855,000 in 2016, which further rose to 1.5 million in 2017, according to the Devdiscourse news portal.
More than 5.5 million foreigners arrived in Vietnam in the first four months of 2018, up to a staggering 29.5 percent over the same period last year. This is according to the latest report from the General Statistics Office.
It seems that Vietnam is an attractive tourist destination among the Western Europeans. An increasing number of tourists and a positive effect they had on Vietnamese tourism revenue proves this.
The Prime Minister also stated that Vietnam should expand the visa exemption policy since nationals from only 24 countries (including ASEAN countries) can enjoy this benefit due to the strict Vietnam visa policies.
